WHY DID KAKASHI KILL RIN?
Welcome back fellow Naruto Lovers! Today, we’re gonna talk about something that even some hardcore fans of the manga Naruto don’t necessarily know or understand after all these years, the secret reason behind Rin’s death.
Of course, some of you who have followed the adventures of our beloved sensei in his arc “Kakashi Gaiden” already know that Kakashi never intended to kill Rin Nohara. Rin knew that she had become a Jinchuriku host against her will, that’s why she committed suicide by putting herself in front of Kakashi’s Chidori to save her village.

WHO IS RIN
Let’s start first by the basics. Rin was a medical ninja from Konohagakure and was part of de Minato’s team with Kakashi Hatake and Obito Uchiha. Possessing an uncommon ability to control his chakra, Rin Nohara excelled in the art of Medical Ninjutsu and was an indispensable element in every mission of Team Minato.
OBITO’S DEATH
During the sabotage mission of the Kannabi Bridge, Rin falls into an ambush orchestrated by Iwagakure ninjas and is taken prisoner in a secret cave and immobilized by a Genjutsu technique.
Rescued by her comrades in extremis, Team Minato is then cornered by one of the Iwa ninjas that kidnapped Rin whose unleashed a powerful Doton Jutsu which made the cave collapse on itself. Trying then to escape as quickly as possible, Kakashi received, unfortunately, a piece of rock on his skull which made him lose consciousness. Obito, witnessing the situation, hastened to rescue Kakashi, risking his life and ending up buried under a pile of rock.
As the dust gradually dissipates, the vision of horror becomes apparent. The right side of Obito has been totally crushed and is blocked under a huge boulder.

As the end was near, Obito decided in a spirit of brotherhood to offer the Sharingan from his left eye to Kakashi as a birthday present to replace the one that Kakashi had just lost.
Obito to Kakashi: “I’m about to… die… but I’ll become your eye”
He, who still had so many dreams, but whose life was, unfortunately, hanging by a thread, made the decision to see the future through the eyes of his best friend thanks to the medical ninjutsu talent of the girl he loved.
Once the operation over, Kakashi launches an assault on the Iwagakure ninja still outside of the cave using his brand new Sharingan that his dying companion offered him in a last burst of generosity, allowing him to finally master his signature technique, the Shidori!⚡
Once his revenge is taken, Kakashi returned to his comrades to witness the last moments of his best friend. However, a terrible Doton attack launched by a new squad of Iwagakure ninjas forced an end to the situation. The cave collapsing, Obito asked Kakashi to take care of Rin and to leave him to his fate, what Kakashi did.
But even with his new Sharingan, Kakashi wasn’t able to take care of all the enemies outside of the cave and while he was ready to die protecting his best friend’s one true love, he’s rescued by his sensei, Minato Namikaze.
HOW DID RIN DIE
A few weeks later, although he has promised Obito to protect Rin, she’s secretly kidnapped by shinobis from Kirigakure. After a special procedure, they succeeded to turn Rin into the Jinchuriki (host) of the three-tails beast, Sanbi.
While Kakashi rescues her and tries to bring her back, Rin feels strange like there was something inside her. She, therefore, asks Kakashi how he did find her and he answered that it was pretty easy as they let a lot of trails behind them to track them down.
Rin realizes that something is going on and that she may be being used as a weapon to destroy Konoha. She, therefore, refuses to go back to the village and asks Kakashi to kill her in order to protect the Leaf, which Kakashi refused, stating that he swore to Obito to always protect her by any means necessary.
While being cornered by Anbu Kirigakure shinobis, she succeeds to put herself in between Kakashi and his opponent while her companion was performing his Chidori technique. Her suicide is horrible, Rin dies in Episode 345 by the hand of her friend, saving her village and putting Kakashi in a terrible situation where he fails to keep his promise to his best friend.

Lots of fans still ask themselves why did Rin die, why did Masashi Kishimoto choose to kill her? The reason may seem sadistic, but Rin’s death was essential to the development of the Naruto series. Thanks to her, several events were able to happen:
- Obito and Kakashi awaken their Mangekyou Sharingans
- Obito accepts and shares Madara’s Infinite Tsukuyomi dream
- Kakashi succumbs to the darkness in his heart to later awaken as the leader of Team 7 and Sixth Hokage
