Inoichi Yamanaka (山中いのいち, Yamanaka Inoichi) was a jōnin-level shinobi from Konohagakure, the father of Ino Yamaka, the previous leading member of the Yamanaka clan, the previous head of the Analysis Team in the village’s Intelligence Division, and formed the fifteenth generation of the trio Ino-Shika-Chō with his former teammates Shikaku Nara and Chōza Akimichi. Inoichi Yamanaka died in the episode 364 of Naruto Shippuden called “The Ties That Bind” (繋がれるもの, Tsunagareru Mono) during the Fourth Shinobi World War, killed by Ten-Tails’ attack at the kage headquarters.

Personality

He had a calm and perceptive nature, generally keeping his personality in check. He was also very analytical, able to reconcile the information gained from his interrogation with that of Shizune in order to understand the workings of the Six Paths of Pain. He possessed an indulgent and chivalrous disposition.[1]

Appearance

Inoichi had long blond hair that was coiled, but ended in a ponytail. He had blue-green eyes and strong facial features, including a well-defined jaw. In his first appearances, Inoichi wore a standard jacket over a black outfit, forehead protector, and a red sleeveless jacket. After a while, he adhered to the standard robes of the members of the Konoha Torture and Interrogation Force, with a long black jacket. During the Fourth Ninja World War, the standard uniform among Konoha’s ninja had remained.

History

Past

In the anime, near the end of the Third Shinobi World War, the newly created members of the Ino-Shika-Chō were assigned to deliver a request for a peace treaty between Konoha and Iwa. Before major hostility occurred, a meeting had been strategically held on the border of the Wind Country, even though the Fourth Kazekage was supervising them. During Kurama’s attack on Konoha, Inoichi had helped defend the village.

Part I

Chūnin Exam

His first appearance, in the aftermath of Exam Chūnin, he was sitting with his companions, monitoring the actions of his daughter.

Konoha Invasion

During the invasion of Konoha, he had protected the village with his companions. He used his technique to make two ninjas fight each other. At the same time, he seemed pleased as he once again remembered the accomplishments of Ino-Shika-Chō.

Part II

Pain’s Assault

When Ibiki Morino proved unable to find out anything about Pain from Yūdachi, he summoned Inoichi to help him enter Yūdachi’s mind. Inoichi was able to access his memories, understanding that Pain had requested corpses from Yūdachi, though still not understanding why. Before completing her reasoning, Ino informed her of Pain’s invasion of Konoha. Consequently, Shizune was killed, amidst the chaos, by the Human Path, but using the information discovered by Shizune, Inoichi realized that Pain’s Paths were corpses controlled in a manner similar to his clan’s techniques, meaning that the real Pain was in a remote location somewhere relatively close by.

While searching for the real Pain, along with Shikaku and a member of the Hyūga clan, they meet up with Naruto. Inoichi asked if Naruto defeated Pain, but Naruto ignores the question, heading towards Pain, discovered by his Sage Mode. Since Naruto refused to have support from the ninja, Inoichi becomes angry, having to be calmed down by Shikaku after a brief argument. Upon hearing the news of Pain’s defeat, Inoichi is seen among the crowd, equally happy.

Fourth Ninja World War

Inoichi had been placed in command of the Intelligence Division. At first, Inoichi organizes all the data of the war, including his free time to talk with Aoba regarding his trip on Turtle Island. Soon after, together with Ao, they create a large sensing sphere.

Later, Ao conveys a new information to the ninjas in the field about the enemies underground. After realizing the chances of the First Division being overwhelmed by the enemies’ forces, Inoichi is informed of a new battle strategy created by Shikaku. He then informs Shizune in order to improve the distribution of care for the wounded.

At the height of the war, he uses a variant of his telepathy, to transmit Shikaku’s thoughts to Darui, Ino, Shikamaru and Chōji, as a means of strategy to seal the infamous Kinkaku. After Kinkaku is sealed, Inoichi praises his daughter telepathically. At night, Inoichi receives numerous reports, from various divisions, regarding ninjas being murdered for no apparent reason. Thus, with Shikaku’s strategies, they discover the infiltration of the White Zetsu Army with their transformation technique and eradicate them within the divisions.

After Naruto and Killer B are allowed to enter the battlefield by A and Tsunade, Inoichi again links Shikaku’s thoughts with them. Shortly after, he is contacted by Dodai, who requests contact with B and the Eight-Tails. When a tremor is felt where Inoichi is, he relays a report that a meteorite has fallen on the location of the Fourth Division. His contact abilities were used for Genma with the Hokage’s Guard Platoon as a means of bringing Mei Terumī to the front line.

After Headquarters receives notification of the situation on the battlefield where Naruto, B and Tobi are, Shikaku asks Inoichi to transmit a message to the Shinobi Alliance within fifteen seconds. Although the other members of the Intelligence Division protested, stating that this would put too great a strain on his body, Inoichi had decided on only ten seconds. Contacting the entire battlefield, he encourages everyone to help Naruto and B. After this feat, his nose bleeds incessantly. Anyway, tired, Inoichi apologizes to Shikaku for his insufficient speech, even though the speech had still taken twenty seconds, but Shikaku consoles him, declaring his friend’s good intentions.

Ten-Tails’ Rebirth

Minutes after the HQ’s sensing sphere becomes insufficient, Inoichi attempts contact with Shikaku, who creates a new strategy to divert Naruto’s attention and solve the problems at the place where Inoichi is managing everything. Among the strategies, Inoichi will command the coordination of several attacks against Madara, Obito, and the reborn Ten-Caudas. In the final phase of Ten-Caudas, Inoichi again attempts one last contact, knowing the consequences of this. Soon, Ten-Caudas had fired a hailstorm of Tailed Beast Ball, including the Headquarters, shortly after Inoichi connects with his close ones.

Abilities

Presumably head of the Yamanaka clan, he has shown himself to be a highly skilled ninja. He is well versed in all the secret techniques of his clan. He was experienced with his own techniques, such as the Body Mind Disruption Technique, so as to interfere with the thoughts of several ninja without any resistance. He possessed a great sense of interrogation and was able to access the deepest memories of others, even with blocks created by Pain. Although struggling with the tension in his body, his telepathy could be extended to a vast area. Because of this, recognizing chakra was one of his capabilities, as long as that signature remained the same.
