The Naruto anime is over since 2017 but still continues to unleash the passions and questions of the fans. Amongst the questions that are still being asked is the question of who is the strongest Hokage?
So, in order to shed some light on this subject we embark on a little retrospective of the most powerful Hokage and the reasons surrounding this power.
7. Kakashi Hatake (without sharingan)
Kakashi Hatake is the sixth Hokage of Hidden Leaf Village. Kakashi has many nicknames, including Copy Ninja, Kakashi of the Sharingan and Cold-Blooded Kakashi. He is considered by many to be one of the most talented Ninjas of his time. He became a Jonin at a very young age and finally became a war hero at the age of 12. His chakra skills were already incredibly impressive even before he possessed the Sharingan.
The only thing holding Kakashi back is his aversion to responsibility. Yet it is always something that is forced upon him because of his natural talents and penchant for leadership. This is exactly why he was chosen to be Tsunade’s successor when she chose to resign after the Fourth Shinobi World War.
This elite ninja was a pioneer of jutsu, creating one of the best close combat techniques ever seen in the Hidden Leaf Village: the Chidori. This attack consists of the wearer concentrating the charka of the lightning element in his palm and using the wild lightning bolts emitted as a portable electric bolt that the shinobi can use to strike and shock his enemies.
6. Tsunade Senju
Tsunade Senju is the fifth Hokage of Hidden Leaf Village: She is one third of the Sannin of Konoha and is considered the most powerful kunoichi and the greatest medical ninja of her time. Tsunade was a valuable asset to the village during the Second Shinobi War, not only for her strength and fighting ability, but also for her medical skills. It is widely believed that Tsuande’s efforts helped Konoha win the war.
Tsunade, a descendant of both the Senju and Uzumaki, is a woman of immense chakra. Most of her jutsus also require incredible chakra control. She is both an offensive and defensive fighter, making her extremely formidable against those who would stand in her way. Her medical ninjutsu was instrumental in the survival of the Five Kage in the battle against Madara.
The lady Hokage is nearly invincible in open combat thanks to the Ninja Art Creation Rebirth – Strength of a Hundred technique, which allows Tsunade to heal extremely quickly from any injury, no matter how severe. For a frame of reference, she was impaled with swords through her torso while using this technique and was able to regenerate all damaged tissue in just seconds.
5. Hiruzen Sarutobi (old)
Hiruzen Sarutobi is the third Hokage of Konoha. Hiruzen had the luxury of being trained by both Tobirama Senju and Hashirama Senju when he was young. This was due to his prodigious talents which became apparent very quickly while he was still a student. Hiruzen was also the mentor of Tsunade, Jiraiya and Orochimaru, who eventually became the legendary Sannin.
As the first Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi earned the nickname “God of Shinobi” and “The Teacher” due to his mastery of all skills, battle forms and transformations of nature. When Hiruzen was Hokage, he was often considered the most powerful Kage of his time. Hiruzen was incredibly powerful at his peak. His chakra reserves began to deteriorate as he aged. Despite this, he was still very powerful, even holding off Orochimaru, who was still at his peak.
One of the techniques the teacher used to good effect was known as Dead Summoning Consuming Soul, which is used to summon a shinigami – a god of death – and use its power to steal someone’s soul or seal them in extremely debilitating ways, such as when Hiruzen fought Orochimaru.
4. Tobirama Senju
Tobirama Senju was the second Hokage of Kohona, who succeeded to the title after the death of Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage. Although not as powerful as his older brother, Tobirama was equally, if not more feared because of his tactics and political eloquence. Tobirama ensured that the village system would become increasingly stable during his tenure as Hokage.
Tobirama’s mastery of ninjutsu is simply phenomenal. He was able to manipulate all five basic nature transformations, but his mastery of water release was particularly unmatched. Tobirama also created some of the most powerful, dangerous and difficult jutsus to master, such as the Flying Thunder God Technique, Impure World Reincarnation and Multiple Shadow Clone Technique.
The Flying Thunder God technique is a type of space-time ninjutsu that allows the user to teleport mainly between marked locations, objects and people. However, to mark a target, the wearer of this technique must place a formula written in chakra on it. These formulas can be used seemingly endlessly and do not seem to fade as they require virtually no chakra to maintain.
3. Minato Namikaze
Minato Namikaze, the yellow flash of Konoha, was the fourth Hokage. He was instrumental in ending the Third Shinobi World War. Minato was one of the most powerful shinobi – and Hokage – of his time, perhaps even of history. During the war, shinobi from other villages were given orders to flee on sight if they encountered Minato. This, of course, for the most part, proved futile. At one point, Minato managed to single-handedly eliminate a thousand ninja. This forced the enemies to accept the Konoha peace treaty.
Minato was appointed Hokage for his efforts during the war. Unfortunately, his reign was short-lived. He eventually gave his life defending the village and his newborn son against the rampaging Nine-Tailed Beast. Many fans believe that if Minato had lived longer, he would have further honed his skills, making him an even more powerful ninja than he already is.
The Yellow Flash has improved many already powerful jutsu, however, his greatest contribution to the world of ninja techniques is arguably the Rasengan. This concentrated ball of energy held in the wearer’s hand acts as a versatile offensive tool that can be used in close combat for devastating effects or thrown, much like the beast-tail bomb attack on which it was based, to critically damage anything it touches.
2. Hashirama Senju
Hashirama Senju was one of the key figures behind the founding of Konohagakure and the village system in general – he became the first Hokage of the village. He was hailed as the ‘God of Shinobi’ for his incredible powers, unmatched by anyone else of his time. Hashirama is also considered one of the most powerful shinobi in history. Madara, who even had the nine-tailed beast under his thumb, was still unable to defeat Hashirama. Using his unique powers and chakra mastery, Hashirama also managed to master eight of the nine-tailed beasts himself.
Hashirama Senju was a reincarnation of Asura Otsutsuki, which gave him powerful life force and physical energy. At one point in his heyday, Hashirama’s immense power allowed him to fight for twenty-four hours at a time.
One of Hashirama’s most powerful techniques was Sage Art Wood Release: True Many Thousands of Hands, which created a huge statue the size of a tailed beast that had thousands of stone arms with which to attack enemies. A colossal titan on the battlefield, this ninja art allowed the First Hokage to single-handedly dominate large-scale conflicts.
1. Naruto Uzumaki
Was there ever any doubt? Naruto Uzumaki, the seventh Hokage of Hidden Leaf Village, is without a doubt the most powerful shinobi to hold the title. Although his early years as a ninja were not impressive, he slowly but surely gained more strength and skill through sheer will and determination. Naruto was also able to learn and use powerful techniques that were far above his assumed skill level, such as the multiple shadow clone technique and the Rasengan.
Like the first Hokage, Naruto is also a reincarnation of Asura Otsutsuki. He is a master of ninjutsu, taijutsu and senjutsu. Naruto has also received powers directly from the Sage of the Six Paths, which allows him to use the Sage of the Six Paths Mode. Naruto’s abilities and powers only increased as he became an adult. He is even capable of facing those who are considered gods in this universe.
Building on the Rasengan technique created by his father Minato, Naruto added the nature of wind into the chakra of his Rasengan to transform it into an ethereal fuma shuriken capable of inflicting more damage than the Rasengan. This portable destructive hurricane he named the Rasenshuriken, which is probably the most powerful version of the beast tail bomb ever created.
